Asthma is a long-term problem with the tubes that carry air to the lungs. The inner lining of these tubes can swell, and the muscles around them can tighten, making them narrower. 

Asthma can change over time; sometimes it may be worse, sometimes better. You may not always have symptoms. When asthma is well cared for, your child should be able to do everything someone without asthma can do.

Symptoms of asthma include:

• Wheezing
• Coughing, especially at night
• Shortness of breath
• Tightness in the chest

It’s normal for children to have challenges. But normal problems can turn into ongoing struggles that affect every part of your child's life. We offer both short- and long-term care to help your child overcome these challenges. 

Signs that your child needs professional support:

• Won’t go to school
• Getting into trouble at school
• Disorganized or does poorly at school
• Being teased or bullied
• Trouble making or keeping friends
• Overly angry
• Won’t follow rules or ignores you
• Grouchy or withdrawn from family and friends

Behavioral health issues can start in childhood. If a child doesn't get the care they need, behavioral health issues could follow them into adulthood.

Depression and anxiety (worrying more than normal) can cause problems in school or social isolation. Behavioral health issues can even lead to suicide.

Our collaborative care program can be an extra tool to help if your child or teen struggles with their behavioral health.

With our collaborative care program, your doctor works closely with a care manager and behavioral health specialist on a care team. Your care team makes sure your child gets the right care. Your care team also watches for any behavioral health changes in your child.  

Your child will get the best results by taking an active role in their care. This approach puts your child at the center of their care.

Your child can ask questions, raise concerns and say what is and isn't working at every step. Your care team gives your child extra support to help them reach their health goals. 

What to expect:

During your child’s visit with their doctor, they can expect screenings and conversations to look for issues like depression or anxiety. 

Your child's doctor may talk about our collaborative care program. If your child's doctor brings up the program, they will make a note of it in your child's health record. The collaborative care program will also be told. 

If the collaborative care program is right for your child, a care manager will sign them up. A care manager may see your child to talk about the program at the same time as their doctor appointment. 

A care manager can also help with your child's overall care, including tracking medicine and making care decisions. 

Our collaborative care program can support patients on state-funded insurance and those who need short-term support. Talk to your doctor and your health plan to find out what's best for your child. 

We specialize in caring for newborns, infants and children with problems with the skin, hair or nails.

Skin disease may affect children differently. Some skin diseases are more common in children or only happen in children.

Some of the skin problems we care for are:

• Acne
• Alopecia (hair loss) 
• Atopic dermatitis (also called eczema)
• Birthmarks (congenital moles a child is born with, port-wine stains, hemangiomas and laser therapy for them)
• Psoriasis (dry, scaly skin rash)
• Contact dermatitis (skin that becomes itchy, red, sore or swollen after touching an allergen)
• Skin infections like warts, molluscum (bumpy skin caused by a virus), and impetigo (red, crusty sores around the nose and mouth)
• Vitiligo (patches of skin or hair that turn white)

The American Academy of Pediatrics suggests developmental screening for children at 9, 18 and 24 months old. This screening is complete. It helps your doctor to determine the proper care to help your child grow up healthy and strong.

Most plans cover the screening. If you have any questions about your child’s screening, please talk to your doctor.

Pediatric ear, nose and throat (ENT) specialists have a broad range of knowledge in caring for children. It's not uncommon for children to need to visit an ENT doctor as the tonsils and adenoids get bigger.

• Problems with unusual bleeding (such as frequent or long nosebleeds and easy bruising)
• Thalassemia trait (a problem in which a person inherits part of the genes that keep the body from getting enough oxygen)

We offer physical therapy for children from birth through age 18. We have a complete outpatient physical therapy center with equipment for children.

We help children with the following medical problems:

• Torticollis (problems with the angle of the head or neck)
• Plagiocephaly (a flat spot on the head)
• Problems with mental abilities
• Problems from fractures (breaks) or surgery
• Brain and nerve system problems
• Spinal cord injury or brain injury problems

We’re able to see patients multiple times per week. We partner with a local pool so that we can offer water therapy to our patients.

A sports physical helps determine whether it’s safe for your child to play sports. Children in Washington state must have sports physicals. For the exact rules, check with your school district.

At The Everett Clinic, our pediatric department includes the sports physical in the yearly well-child exam.

Schedule your child’s sports physical at least six weeks before the start of the sports season. This will give enough time for paperwork and any follow-up to take place. 

There are two parts to a sports physical: Medical history and physical exam. 

The medical history will include questions such as:

• Heart health history and symptoms
• Illnesses your child had when they were younger
• Allergies
• Current medications
• Serious illness in the family
• Prior injuries and surgeries

The physical exam will include checking:

• Vision
• Weight and height
• Blood pressure and pulse
• Heart, lung, abdomen (middle of the body), ear, nose and throat
• Posture, joints (where two bones meet) and flexibility
