Digital mammography

——

Text

Getting regular screenings is one of the best ways to stay healthy. A screening mammogram is important because it can find breast cancer early when it’s easier to care for.

3D mammography

3D mammography is a new tool designed to improve how we find the early signs of breast cancer. It creates multiple thin images of the breast, called “slices.” The slices can be put together to create a 3D image.

The 3D mammography image can help us find the exact location of any problems with the breast. A radiologist uses a special computer to look at the images.

  • A screening mammogram uses a low level of X-rays to create an image of the breast. It helps doctors see whether there are any problems or changes in the breast that might need care.

  • When you make your appointment, we’ll ask you about your breast-health history. Please let us know if you:

    • Have breast implants
    • Are nursing or pregnant
    • Have any problems with your breasts
    • Have any special needs

For your mammogram, we’ll give you a robe and ask you to undress from the waist up. You’ll go to a private room and stand in front of the mammography machine. A specially trained female technologist will gently move your breast so it fits on the imaging platform.

A clear plastic plate will then slowly press down on your breast. It will stay in place for only a few seconds. It's not harmful, and helps create a clear picture of your breast using a very small amount of X-rays. In general, two X-rays are taken of each breast.

  • Most women who have had a mammogram will tell you that it's uncomfortable, but not painful. It's a good idea to schedule your mammogram when your breasts are least tender. This is typically two or three days after your period.

  • We use only the most modern mammography equipment. It uses a very low level of X-rays. The chance of having a problem from the radiation is very small compared to the good that can come from finding a problem early.
